Late at night, a young couple takes a romantic swim in a moonlit lake. Suddenly, a whirlpool appears that rapidly grows larger and spreads, sucking the terrified lovers into its depths. Minutes later, the whirlpool subsides, and the water is still again.
A new mine shaft near a mining town is the location of another extraordinary event. The earth suddenly opens up and swallows a boy, but his aunt Nina, a geologist, Nina, is able to save him at the last moment.
Hours later, at a press conference for the building site incident, the mining company chairman Schneider is still unaware of the disappearance of the young couple the night before.
Schneider attempts to calm down the townspeople who have gathered to demand an explanation. He assures them that the crater was simply a normal sinkhole – a typical occurrence in mining regions – and declares they have nothing further to worry about.
But Nina has a different opinion. She has discovered a series of poorly constructed and unstable tunnels that are in the midst of breaking down, which, according to her estimates, will cause the town’s hospital to cave in within 36 hours.
Even worse news is still to come. Nina’s calculations show that at least half a dozen other tunnels have just caved in under the famous Ruhr football stadium, where a decisive football match is currently underway and attended by over 60,000 unsuspecting fans. Despite her predictions that the stadium faces imminent collapse, the townspeople ridicule her theories.
Unwilling to lose any more time, Nina decides to act on her own: Together with three friends and her ex-boyfriend Thomas – an explosives expert – Nina and her dad - a retired miner - descend over a thousand meters into the tunnels in the hope of preventing the terrible catastrophe and saving 60,000 lives.
Together with three friends and her ex-boyfriend Thomas – an explosives expert – Nina and Horst descend over a thousand meters into the tunnels in the hope of preventing the terrible catastrophe and saving 60,000 lives.
Deep under the Earth’s surface, it’s a race against time.
The paralyzing fear of the suffocating darkness combined with the hate and distrust within the team make for the possibility that none will ever again see the light of day, much less save the multitude of spectators above…
