Drama | Miniseries, 2 x 90’
Many years ago, marine biologist Elena lost her twin brother during a deep-sea diving competition. Years later, after the death of her mother, Elena discovers that her father, who had abandoned the family shortly after she was born, might be living in Australia. She begins a harrowing search for him that plunges her into Australia’s exotic but perilous underwater world.
Her father, Steve Atkins, is now head of a research station and works together with his team on a project to win official protection for the small bay “Coral Edge” and its unique plant and animal life. Initially cold and distant, he only has one true love in his life – the sea.
Dreading the responsibility for a daughter he never knew, the seemingly callous Steve initially evades his fatherhood by changing the results of a blood test. He makes Elena believe that her father is Steve’s enemy, George Bickham, a powerful and unscrupulous oil tycoon.
Bickham’s only interest is drilling for the oil that has been discovered in “Coral Edge”, a goal he is willing to reach at any cost. Elena soon discovers that George is not the only dire threat to Steve’s small marine paradise…
A sunken WW II submarine and its cargo of toxic chemicals poses a grave threat to the coast’s abundant sea life. There’s immediate cause for alarm as the barrels containing the deadly poison are heavily corroded and may release their deadly contents into the bay at any moment.
When an unidentified diver meddles with the submarine, apparently to gain access to the poisonous materials, marine biologist Phil, part of Steve’s crew, dives after him. As an underwater fight breaks out, Elena is forced to overcome her paralyzing fear of diving to save him. An explosion causes the submarine to sink further into a deep-sea trench, and Elena and Phil barely escape with their lives.
Brought closer together by these events, she confides to Phil the trauma that has stricken her since the death of her brother. Elena tried to rescue her brother, who was trapped 50m below the water surface, but a mind-numbing fear of drowning forced her panicked return to the surface. Elena still believes she’s the one to blame for her brother’s death.
But now a tropical storm is approaching, posing an enormous threat to the fragile chemical-filled containers. To prevent a horrible natural catastrophe, Elena and Steve have to act immediately. When Steve is trapped underwater with a rapidly diminishing air supply, Elena realizes that he will soon die without help.
With no available diving equipment, and the trauma of her past threatening to repeat itself, she must overcomes her deepest fears and dive into the depths of her anxiety in order to save her father…
