Thriller fan Max von Hohenfels circulates invitations to a “Murder Game”. The rich lord wants to find out just how clever Agathe’s crime solving talents really are. Besides Agathe and Cornelius Stingermann, also attending is von Hohenfels’ brother and heir Teddy, a worthless playboy who lives his luxury lifestyle on money borrowed from his brother.
Other guests include Isabella, Hohenfels’ former lover, who had miscarried their expected child, Katja, the Lord’s private nurse, Luca, who manages von Hohenfels’ estate and finally Moll, the arrogant author of crime thrillers.
The lights dim and the game begins… but as soon as the room is again bathed in light they make a ghastly discovery - Max von Hohenfels is dead! His family doctor determines a heart attack to be the cause of death, but Agathe has her doubts and is compelled to remain at the scene to find evidence.
Commissar Krefeld, angry to be disturbed at such a late hour, still responds to the summons and arrives at the estate. Quickly, traces of poison are discovered in Hohenfels’ cigar…
It’s not long before Agathe concludes that every single guest present had a motive. Shortly before his death, Hohenfels had cut off his brother’s financial support. Had Teddy killed his brother out of pure greed? Even Isabella had a reason to wish her former lover dead: He was always putting her down and as well, he was determined to sell her favorite horse Shadow, from which he was thrown and the reason he is now confined to a wheelchair.
Even Katja and Luca are suspected… the two are apparently in love. Hohenfels had set Katja up as a surrogate mother for his heirs – a move that had infuriated Luca. Luca’s hatred for the lord, who had once been like a father to him, has steadily grown more potent over the years.
Then Moll also comes into question… is he guilty of plagiarism? Is it also possible that Max von Hohenfels knew of his indiscretion? Inspector Krefeld arrests Moll on the weight of overwhelming evidence. Just when the case seems all wrapped up, Luca dies when he is thrown from a horse. What appears to be merely an accident turns out to be yet another murder…
Had the same person killed both Hohenfels and Luca? For the cunning Agathe, solving the baffling case is just a matter of time…
