A cyclist, Berthold Pachel, has been pushed off a bridge by a mysterious jogger.
Shortly before the fatal incident, he had received a strange telephone call. Investigating his close contacts, Leo and Nina discover that Pachel was formerly a member of a clique of enthusiastic rafters who hadn’t met since one of their group died in a mysterious accident over a year ago.
Leo and Nina question Pachel’s estranged widow, Anne, as well as two of the five members of the rafting group: Elke and Hendrik Landsberg. They claim to have no idea as to why anybody would murder their friend. Then suddenly Pachel’s widow receives a threatening phone call, to which Leo and Nina promptly respond… enabling them to save the woman’s life barely in the nick of time.
She is rushed to the hospital where she lies in a coma. Leo and Nina have come to realize that the violent crimes are the work of a serial killer – one who for whatever reason is targeting these five friends. The question remains: who could it possibly be, and what is their motive?
