When Hanna’s husband Karl is called to serve in WWII, she is left alone to care for the family and his cabinet-making business throughout the war and the difficult times that follow. 
During this time, she discovers how much she enjoys working with wood and comes to truly love the profession. With the help of her mother-in-law Marianne and the shop apprentice Xaver, she is able to handle the double burden of family and job without too much difficulty.
When Karl is released from captivity in 1952 and returns, he wants Hanna to resume her old roll as mother and housewife. Despite her best efforts, however, she is simply no longer the woman she once was. 
Although Karl senses Hanna’s newfound strength and her desire to be treated as an equal in their partnership, he nevertheless retreats into his old patriarchal value system – in which the man’s word is final. 
Hanna feels trapped, misunderstood and patronized, while Karl – broken by the war – simply cannot pick up where he had so long ago left off. When Mayor Hans Zollner attempts to force the sale of the cabinet-making shop to his cousin, Karl and Hanna must learn to accept that one cannot turn back the hands of time...
