Karen has been enjoying a pleasant but routine marriage to her husband Paul for more than ten years, although they have no children. Paul even suggests adoption, but it proves to be bad timing.
Karen has just received an offer from the owner of the wine store where she has worked for several years to take over the shop.
Realizing this could be a turning point in her life, Karen asks her best friend Marie for advice.
She is optimistic about Karen’s new direction and convinces her and Paul that Karen should take the leap. 
Although Marie has been unfortunate in her past relationships, she now believes that with Marc, a professional photographer, her unlucky streak is finally over.
She persuades Marc to take pictures of the wine shop for an article she is writing for her newspaper, but the encounter between Marc and Karen has a completely unexpected outcome: 
Karen begins an affair with the photographer. She feels guilty, but her bad conscience disappears when she is with Marc.
But then Marc confronts her with a harsh reality: They have absolutely no future together; she belongs to Paul, and he himself is in love with Marie. Karen feels used and hurt by his abrupt ending of their relationship.
Soon afterwards, Marc accepts a marriage proposal from Marie and Karen learns that she is pregnant…
