The Deputy Zoo Director and single mom Sonja is raising her daughter Hanna on the zoo’s premises. In time, Hanna becomes friends with Tom, the son of the good-looking architect Mark. Although it’s been ages since she’s shown a man any interest, Sonja now dares to flirt with Mark.
Mark works for the sharp-tongued city councilwoman Antonia, who delivers a bombshell when she unveils her new plans: The zoo is to be torn down to make room for a modern shopping complex.
Sonja and her colleagues are left completely stunned, but for Hanna it is also a major catastrophe. The impending closure means that she will be separated from her favorite penguin.
Still, Sonja is far from giving up hope: a poll will now determine the zoo’s fate. Sonja battles to convince the people to keep the zoo, while Mark fights for a new shopping mall. Despite their political differences, the two are extremely attracted to each other.
Then, Sonja is dealt yet another blow. Someone has sabotaged the zoo facilities directly before an inspection from the state’s veterinary department. Viewing the chaotic scene before them, the inspectors are shocked by the zoo’s disastrous condition.
The responsibility lands on Sonja, who fears for her job. She suspects that the sabotage was Mark’s doing, and when she accidentally overhears a conversation that seems to confirm it, she is deeply hurt.
With the zoo’s closing inevitable, the decision to relocate the penguins has already been made. When Hanna learns that her beloved penguin will be put to sleep because no other facility is willing to take him, she and Tom come up with a plan to prevent it. Finally, Mark and Sonja, who realize they have both made mistakes, join forces to save the zoo…
