The Herzke household is modern and hectic. The parents, Thomas and Susanne, are always working and continually on the go, so the kids are constantly being cared for by strangers. Mechthilde, an elegant young woman, quickly fascinates both the children as well as their parents with her unique ways and her fantastic stories of an ancient Chinese prophecy. She meditates before eating, thwarts robbers with kung fu, and slowly reveals to the children the magical secret that has led her to their family.
An old music box, picturing a wedding, is at the center of Mechthilde’s tale. It’s the same ancient souvenir that their father once brought back from China. One important detail was still missing on the reproduction – the bride.
This old music box that the kids ended up selling on the Internet is the focus of a story that began a long, long time ago when the Chinese prince Cao decided to marry a young German girl – named Mechthilde. But the prince’s mother – the evil queen Cixi – was dead-set against it and plotted to kill the girl.
The two lovers could only be saved by being turned into wooden figures and secreted away in a music box. But when Cixi discovered the secret of the music box, she broke the wooden figure of the German girl apart to separate the lovers once and for all. However, the friends of Mechthilde saved the figure and sent it secretly to the Herzke’s in Germany.
Now, to break the curse and re-unite her with her lover, this modern-day Mary Poppins and the Herzkes set off on a wild chase for the lost music box, with dark forces always in close pursuit…
