The ambitious interior designer Gretchen Fingerhut is far more interested in her career than in having a family. Quickly, she gains international recognition at a London architectural firm.
But Gretchen has remained close with her childhood friend Sarah Berger, a down-to-earth cabinetmaker who would like nothing more than a loving husband and a noisy flock of kids. With Gretchen's brother Rudi and his buddy Ben Ritter, the four form a quartet of tight friends.
When Gretchen returns from London, she and Sarah are finally able to fulfill their shared dream of founding an interior design company. Soon, Fingerhut & Berger has the chance to land their first major client.
However, their competitor Clemens Vogelmann puts a contemptible plan into effect. He seduces both women – all the while managing to keep each relationship secret from the other. Falling in priority, the critical contract slips away into the distance.
Meanwhile Ben, who has realized that Gretchen is more to him than just “Rudi's little sister”, is suddenly faced with losing her to another man. When he does intervene, Clemens’ two-timing ploy disintegrates, leaving Gretchen and Sarah’s friendship heavily wounded – and their business partnership threatened…
