Christiane Schachtner has everything that she could possibly want - overwhelming success as the author of popular mystery novels, a wonderful husband Boris, in his mid-40s, who cherishes her and a sweet, young married daughter Greta with an excellent future before her– all the trappings of a perfectly wonderful family life.
But that perfect life suddenly turns into a nightmare when a terrible gas explosion rips through the Schachtner’s villa, killing Boris. Through sheer luck both Christiane and Greta manage to survive the tragedy, but the ordeal is far from over.
The police determine that the Schachtners themselves are to blame for the accident - apparently the gas in the kitchen stove had been left on. In her emotionally charged grief Greta lashes out at her mother, blaming her for her father’s death. It seems that Christiane had left the gas running when she was distracted by an important telephone call from her publisher…
But Christiane is sure that she didn’t. Shortly thereafter, she receives a mysterious photograph of herself, Greta and Boris happily barbecuing on their lawn. The photo appears to have been taken from the street, directly before the catastrophic explosion – by a hidden observer.
What makes the photo even more chilling is the fact that the faces of both Greta and Boris had been completely erased. Christiane, with her natural instincts for criminal investigation fully awakened, quickly concludes that the explosion was a murder and no accident.
Based on the photo, she also believes that Boris’ murderer also has Greta in his sights. But the police are unwilling to take Christiane’s suspicions seriously. Having already lost her husband, she’s determined not to lose Greta… but time is definitely not on her side.
